Shahida Hussain came to us wanting to extend one of her client’s holiday homes with a guardian tiled roof. Her client wanted to let extra light into the home but without it becoming too hot in the summer and losing too much heat in the winter.
So their requirements and budget ticked the Guardian tiled roof option perfectly.
Here, we talk you through you each step of the guardian tiled roof process.
DIGGING THE FOOTING AND BUILDING UP TO DAMP COURSE
It takes roughly 1-2 days to dig the footings out and remove the excess mud. It’s imperative the floor is level before we start to add breeze blocks and the blue engineering bricks. Fortunately this house is fairly new, so identifying a like for like brick match was fairly easy.
HARDCORE, INSULATION BRICKS, BLUE BRICKS AND MEMBRANE.
The next stage is to add hardcore and sand to make sure the surface is solid before insulating the floor. Again making sure this is level and at the correct height is important. If it’s not done correctly it can cause problems later.
This took the team approximately 3 days.
INSULATING AND SCREEDING
Many companies may compromise on the quality of the insulation used – not us. Again it’s really important the height of the insulation/screeding is correct so if the customer chooses to tile or add under floor heating later then it’s level without noticeable gaps between the new and the old flooring.
SCREEDING DRIES AND EXTERIOR BRICKWORK GOES UP
Once the screeding is dry, we can then proceed and finish the brickwork. At this point the surveyor would need to visit/inspect too. Measurements are taken and products such as frames and roof are ordered to size so everything fits perfectly.
FRAME AND ROOF FITTED ON ARRIVAL
Depending on design and specification, it takes approximately 1-2 weeks for the frame and the roof to arrive. Once it arrives, the fitting team come in again and get back to work.
ADDING THE ROOF AND FIRST FIXINGS
Depending on the size it can take up to 3 days to complete the fitting of the frame/roof. Once secure, the electrician comes in to do first fixings.
TILING THE ROOF, SECOND FIXINGS AND PLASTERBOARD
The roof is tiled and the electrician comes back to do the second fixings. The fitting team put plasterboard around the brickwork too. Depending on the client’s extra requirements it can take up to 3-4 days to finish the inside. Underfloor heating, painting and electrical ceiling fans are all common add ons.
FINAL CHECKS AND OVERALL INSPECTION
TADA!! Not just yet i’m afraid. Many companies would leave without testing everything. At Crown Windows we thoroughly test each product from the roof being waterproof to the doors and windows opening smoothly without squeaking. All the units are cleaned and sealed.
Once we have checked everything, ensured the customer is happy – we then smoke another victory cigar and go again on another new project the next working day.
Overall build time from beginning to end: Approx 5-6 weeks.
